Southern Hemisphere: Spring Romance

Spring Romance

Shop here--->Spring Romance by selenamarie318 featuring lacy tops

It's almost Spring in the Southern hemisphere, but I feel like the colors and styles are still relevant right now for the North. I love the soft pinks and minty green colors. There is something doll-like and precious about this look, and I feel like it adds a dash of dainty to the look which I just adore.

Plus I think in Autumn, when the chill begins to set in, a little bit of Spring for those of us in the North is like a dash of salt on a Summer melon-just right.

What do you think?

Home: Vintage Country Kitchen

Vintage Country Kitchen

I have to admit, I have a little bit of an obsession with vintage anything. Half of my closet is borderline costumey-retro. Red and white has a tendency to remind me of that, and this vintage country kitchen combo on Polyvore by "Deuxs" is right along that line. Red and white gingham, a retro inspired radio, and old time cafe coffee cups with an old fashion enamel metal chair, checkerboard pitcher, and dreamy retro fridge all add up to one sweet country kitchen with a kick! So cute!

Send me your Polyvore board link to be considered as a featurette!

Recap: Anna Sui SS/14

Recap: Anna Sui SS/14

I love this Anna Sui recap by "Painthead" on Polyvore. I have always been an Anna Sui fan. She was one of the first designers I followed in my younger years. She always has a quirky, romantic, feminine touch, which I love. I'm all about that gold dress (bottom, left). Divine!

Which of these is your favorite?

Shockingly Accurate Fashion Predictions for 2000 by Designers in 1939

Fashion designers in 1939 were asked to forecast what women would wear in 2000 AD. Some of their predictions were shockingly accurate!

They predicted:

- Adjustable clothing, that can translate from day to night (I want that dress in the video!)
- Dresses of transparent netting with strategic matte placement for modesty
- Hair styles high up on the head
- Pants will overtake dresses in popularity
- Shoes will take on the shape of a cantilever
- An electric belt will adapt the body to climactic changes
- Atmospheres will be adjusted to meet the most scientifically correct temperature.
- Wedding dresses will be adorned with glass
- A dress with a zippered sash to change it from day to evening
- Men will grow out their beards in lieu of shaving
- Men will avoid colors, pockets, and ties
- But they will be "fitted with "a telephone, a radio, and containers for coins, keys, and candy for cuties."

Of course, candies for cuties! ;)

Thanks mentalfloss.com fot the @VintageFashions Youtube video link!

Which of these do you think are most accurate? Which are not?
What are your predictions for 2075 (that's 62 years from now)?

Anatomy of Darkness & Hitchcock's The Birds

Anatomy of Darkness

Anatomy of Darkness by selenamarie318 on Polyvore

I love anatomical drawings. They have a sort of moody darkness. This board reminds me of the Hitchcock movie, The Birds (1963). I love this original trailer. Hitchcock is so chic with his bird lecture. I can't imagine a trailer like this these days. Storytelling is a beautiful art, one which I greatly admire and Hitchcock was a legend. Seeing as tomorrow is Friday the 13th (and blog delivery is sent to your inbox the next day), I thought this might be a fitting post! Enjoy the clip!

Remembering September 11th

Painted in 2001
I can still remember it so clearly. I was sitting in my high school science class just two rows from the window when it happened. Someone told our science teacher to turn on the TV that sat in the upper left hand corner of the room. Our whole class sat and watched the news replay the first plane flying into one of the World Trade Center towers. As we say there, watching the split screen- one with a replay of what had just happened, a second plane emerged on the other side of the screen in live feed. We watched a tiny spec grow until we realized what it was- another plane was flying into the second building. I remember going from class to class in a daze that day, until I walked into my English teacher, Mrs. Cory's class. She had always had a level set way about her in her teaching and on this day, she didn't let us down. She turned off the TV, stood at her podium, and told us as firmly as she did about anything else, that on that day, we would look back and it would be a day we would remember for the rest of our lives. She was right.

Just days after the attacks happened, I sat on the floor of my messy bedroom and made this collage out of newspaper articles written about the events. I carefully tore up pieces with negative content and cut out the tiny dates and facts to circle around it. However, in the top left hand corner, I placed positive clips like an image of two people holding hands, with words like "unity" and quotes like "forgiveness leads to peace," and "conflict is not inevitable, nor is peace impossible." I don't remember who said them, I just knew the positive was important. And then with tears streaming down my face, I painted a wash over it all in the shape and colors of an old and ragged American Flag, now symbolizing red- the blood of the victims, white-the sweat of the volunteers, and blue- all the tears that were shed because of this horrible, fateful day. It has been a continuously changing piece. Over time the paper has begun to turn brown, and the words have begun to fade, but the feeling I get when I look at it remains the same- a feeling of deep sadness combined with hope for a better tomorrow.

I don't know if you are religious (I don't usually like that word- it often has negative connotations), but today is certainly a day of prayers and peaceful, reflective thoughts. I hope one day we can find the peace that will break the barriers of hatred with love and unite us with one heart in the spirit of truth. May the love and peace of our Creator shine down on us and may the memory of September 11th remain with us forever, so that we can learn from our past and one day find the freedom that will bring unity for all. May God bless America and the world.

Artist Spotlight: Greta Corens

Our newest artist spotlight is an accomplished fashion designer turned fine art water colorist, Greta Corens.

"Roses In A Bunch" By Greta Corens

"Iris Joan Sutherland" By Greta Corens

Corens is as equally passionate and artistic in her way of life as she is in her way of speaking. She titles her pieces in the same emotive words of which her paintings represent- a colorful, glowing vocabulary of excitement balanced by a kind of soft romance with a decidedly European influence. Her work currently focuses on still lives, graphite portraits, and sepia tone nude figure paintings, but her most exquisite work by far is that of her watercolor floral depictions.

"Botanicals: Iris Rhapsody" By Greta Corens

"Iris La Forza Del Destino" By Greta Corens

 "Iris Donatello" By Greta Corens
"Rosa di Jaques Brel" By Greta Corens

Corens' work has an ethereal quality. Her skills in floral painting can range from the depth of the velvety opacity of a rose petal to the evocative nature of beautiful x-rays with the translucence of sunlight shining through the petals of an iris, illuminating veins and features often difficult to portray in her chosen medium of water color.

"Minuetto di Rose"  By Greta Corens
"Bouquet Romantique" By Greta Corens

Ms. Corens will be an associate member of the American Watercolor Society for 2014. She received second prize at a juried show in the Bendheim Gallery in Greenwich, CT with her piece, "Bouquet Romantique" and is currently available for gallery showcases.

You can view her website or contact her here and read her artist statement below:
