Was Lady Gaga's Summerfest Performance A Fizzle Or Sizzlin' Hot?

The following is a guest post review from continuing guest blogger, Erin Shiely. Erin is reporting from "The World's Largest Music Festival," Summerfest, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA:

Last night as I walked through the gate of Milwaukee’s Marcus Amphitheater, I was enveloped in a mass of people decorated in lace, glitter, pleather and various other ornamental statements. It was the fantastically bizarre atmosphere one would expect when attending a concert by none other than the Marilyn Manson of pop, Lady Gaga.

The show opened with a curtain drop to reveal sets that can only be described as a blank phallic canvas for laser lights and trippy image projections. In a grand entrance Gaga emerged wearing a sparkly bodysuit and wings, carried by a team of scantily clad muscular men. She opened with a string of new songs from her November album Artpop which was met with less than stellar reviews. The little Monsters watched in awe of their decorated pop queen, despite a lack of connection to the songs.

Gaga and her phallic stage design

swift change in energy was evident when Gaga asked everyone to “Just Dance.” In a triumphant rendition of old favorites such as “Pokerface”, “Bad Romance”, and “Paparazzi” the crowd awakened into a vibrant rave of singing and dancing. After an energizing slew of songs, Gaga switched gears and captivated the audience with a genuinely heartfelt piano ballad of “Born this Way.” All too often concert-goers are disappointed by an artist’s inability to perform live. Lady Gaga, delivered vocally in a way that most studio performers would only dream of attaining. Her voice prevailed vigorously on every note.

Although Lady Gaga has been made famous for her energetic dance anthems, her enduring message of love and acceptance has spawned a fiercely loyal fan base. Many critics have described Gaga’s latest album as “desperate” or “washed up.” Despite the less successful Artpop album, her little Monsters are more than forgiving. In return Gaga always presents a fabulous spectacle, well worth the price of admission.

Gaga, captivating the fans

NERD ALERT! Super Stoked About Stargate Reboot!

I'm a little late in the game, but I still thought I'd share a note saying, "Woot! Woot!" My favorite sci-fi franchise is getting a reboot, and it's about time! I was pretty sure Stargate had gone to it's starry grave, but no! It has been resurrected. Hallelujah!

According to The Wrap, last month there was an announcement that Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the original 'Stargate' creators are back on board in partnership with MGM & Warner brothers for a new Stargate film, set to be a trilogy. I don't know about you, but I am glad to hear the Stargate universe (not to be confused with the show Stargate Universe) is set to come back to life. Sci-Fi fans have been petitioning to save the franchise for quite some time. The trilogy has a lot to live up to. According to The Wrap, "at the time of “Stargate's” release in 1994, the film set the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend in October and went on to gross nearly $200 million worldwide at the box office."

Will this new trilogy spark a new generation of Stargate fans or will it fizzle flat in comparison to the universe fans so dearly love?

Only time will tell, but this sci-fi nerd will be lined up to see it on opening night.

Is Ultraviolence Ultra Seductive?

The following is a guest post album review by Erin Shiely:

Lana Del Rey has triumphantly returned with the release of her second studio album Ultraviolence. In contrast to her previous albums, Born to Die and ParadiseUltraviolence exudes a much darker feeling complementary to Lana’s haunting vocals which fans have come to adore. With Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys as producer, the majority of the album keeps a melancholy tempo.

The lead single West Coast offers a taste of 60’s psychedelic, yet a unique contemporary sound. In typical Lana fashion, the lyrics entice the listener with the fantasies and desires of a distressed woman who has an appetite for passion and lavish things. The recurring theme of fatalism comes full circle with the tracks Money Power Glory and F***ed My Way to the Top. There are moments where the imagery and ambiance is near pornographic yet beautiful in its own way. Fans are likely to recognize Lana's maturity as an artist with Ultraviolence but the darker sense may be an acquired taste for some.

Trends: Rose Gold Watches

Trends: Rose Gold Watches

Juicy Couture watch / MARC BY MARC JACOBS watch / Breda watch / Michael kors bracelet / Fossil watch / Nixon Watches watch / Stainless steel jewelry / Invicta stainless steel jewelry / Lucien Piccard rose gold bracelet / Michael kors bracelet / Fossil watch / Michael kors bracelet, $390 / Olivia Burton watch, $120 / Michael kors jewelry, $390 / Fossil watch / Karl Lagerfeld watch / Invicta ceramic watch / Glam Rock stainless steel jewelry

Finally my favorite metal color- rose gold is making a comeback! With it's nostalgic, romantic quality, rose gold is sure to be a popular metal color among the young-adult hipster market, as well as the older, more established market. Look for mixed metals, accent colors, and traditional clock faces rather than digital. It only makes sense- these days people carry their clock on their phones, but if you are wearing a watch it is primarily for aesthetic reasons. Roman numerals will be especially popular- classic, timeless, gorgeous, with an emphasis on larger clock faces and a little bit of bling, if you know what I'm saying. Might as well make it loud and proud if your gonna rock the old-school clock, eh?

Summer Trend: Yellow Statement Necklaces

Summer Trends: Yellow Statement Necklaces

Ek Thongprasert necklace, $1,035 / Ek Thongprasert necklace, $830 / Yellow jewelry

Looks like yellow is going to make an appearance this summer in a big way, and if you want to add a pop of color, yellow is the mellowest. The above shows two super splurge items (and let's be honest, they are each more than a months rent, even two months, depending on where you live). The necklace in the center, though a different styling, is much more affordable for about $22. It's a yellow knotted rope necklace and it has a sporty feel, perfect for summer.

What is your favorite summer accessory?

NERD ALERT: NASA Designed A Warp Drive Ship Right Out of 'Star Trek'

nasa, has, designed, a, futuristic, warp, drive, ship, right, out, of, 'star, trek',

Yep, that's right. This is not a fictional post! This might sound like something straight out of your favorite science fiction TV shows and movies, but it is in fact something that NASA is seriously researching.

Want the short version? As PolicyMic reports via io9, this is how it works: " 'In terms of the engine's mechanics, a spheroid object would be placed between two regions of space-time (one expanding and one contracting)," explains io9. "A 'warp bubble' would then be generated that moves space-time around the object, effectively repositioning it — the end result being faster-than-light travel without the spheroid (or spacecraft) having to move with respect to its local frame of reference.'
That means the spacecraft won't actually be traveling faster than light; it'll bend the spaces around it and make distances shorter, which is much cooler."
Here are some beautiful concept model images.

If you want to hear more of the nerdy scientific details behind this concept model, check out this YouTube video.

To be frank, I can't say I understand everything he is saying in this video, but I am interested in the idea nonetheless.

By the way, if you didn't notice, the model is aptly named after the starship USS Enterprise.

What sci-fi concepts do you hope will become reality?
