What Are We Really Selling & What Is Being Sold?

"Ads sell more than products. They sell values. They sell images. They sell concepts of love and sexuality, of success, and perhaps most important of normalcy. To a great extent they tell us who we are and who we should be." Jean Kilbourne

Dîner en Blanc®: The Ultimate Global White Party

Hello, all my kindred spirits! I hope you all had a lovely holiday!

The following is a guest post by my dear friend Darryl Warren. We worked together as co-petition organizers on the petition to Please Make Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty A Traveling Exhibition.

Darryl is a talented blogger/forecaster who focuses his posts on the sociology of fashion. Here he shares his views on an event he attended in the Northern Hemisphere in Spring/Summer. I thought it would be fitting for my Northern and Southern hemisphere fans- especially my Brazilian readers, as Brazilians have a tradition to wear white on New Years Eve! It is thought to bring good luck!

Dîner en Blanc®: The Ultimate Global White Party

Dîner en Blanc®: The Ultimate Global White Party by fashionobserved featuring a white tie dress

"The proliferation of white featured in most Spring Summer 2014 collections only highlights the importance of white as a millennial mainstay. That white was prominent in previous spring summer collections as well as having a place in fall winter collections form last season only serves to emphasize its importance.

Not coincidental is the surge in popularity in participating in one of the more exclusive epicurean celebrations gaining esteem not only for its mystery and spontaneity, but also for the fashion element of the entire celebration focused on a strict adherence to a code of white in elegant expression.

Launched with just a handful of friends more than 20 years ago and founded by François Pasquier in 1988, Paris’ Dîner en Blanc® came out spontaneously when he wanted to hold a dinner party to reconnect with friends after living abroad for a few years. The idea was so infectious that the requests to join resulted in setting the gathering at the Bois de Boulogne. He also asked them to dress in white so they could find each other and to bring a friend.

24 years later, the French capital’s most prestigious sites have played host to it and following in the footsteps of Paris, one of the sons of Francois Pasquier, Aymeric Pasquier, moved to Montreal and kept his family tradition going when he came together with friends and held the first Dîner en Blanc® in August 2009.

In 2011, Aymeric associated himself with Sandy Safi to launch the first US Dîner en Blanc in New York. On August 25th, 2011, 1200 diners (selected from over 30,000 hopefuls) celebrated outdoors in front of the wonderful World Financial Center in Battery Park. Over a dozen cities, on five continents joined the Dîner en Blanc® family in 2012, including Vancouver and, as of this year, Los Angeles.

The event is only expected to gain popularity as a phenomenon representative of the desire to commune in spontaneity to create memories that transcend past habits of merely logging eve action on social media. The all-white colour scheme reflects the clean palette of hopefulness we anticipate as we live the millennium celebrating the moment in style.

Dress for the millennium and a white, bright fabulous future; the designers have made it so easy now."

Proof That You Don't Need Expensive Cameras To Take Beautiful Photos

My friend Linny, a very talented photographer at Linny Foerg Photography recently shared this on her Facebook page. It was only last week that we were discussing in detail how silly it seems when people make a big deal about needing expensive cameras in order to get a good photo. An expensive camera does not make a great photographer. Talent outshines equipment. This is a great example.

At the bridal party's behest, photographer Kim A. Thomas shot the entire wedding using her iPhone 4s and the photos are beautiful!

Flare Magazine Even Photoshops Perfect Jennifer Lawrence To Look Skinnier

[Sophspriation via Jezebel]

What is wrong with this industry when fashion magazines will Photoshop someone who is already breathtakingly beautiful and make them skinnier?

I can understand a little bit of make-up enhancement to compensate for lighting concerns. I can even dismiss the removal of a few blemishes. But look at this GIF and tell me, why? They moved her bones around! When will this stop?

How can we teach young girls to embrace and love themselves if we perpetuate these entirely unrealistic body images?

Feather Lashes A La Jennifer Lawrence & The Hunger Games!

My friend Edney Suiter of Edney Suiter Photography recently posted this beautiful photo on his Facebook page. In honor of the Hunger Games Catching Fire film last month, I thought this would be fitting to share! After the crowds see Jennifer Lawrence with those beautiful feather lashes, I foresee that feathered lashes are going to be a big trend!

Makeup: Debora Quiros, Jewelry/Styling: Ruth Barbosa

Tip: When looking to pull off a strong eyelash or eye color, avoid strong lip color, which may look too clownish in combination. Instead keep it natural on the lips and face for a more refined look. Debora did just that here and it looks magnificent. You can match your jewelry to your lashes for a classy way to connect your makeup look and make it feel more like the key accessory of your outfit, just as Ruth has done here.

Beautiful!

May the photos be ever in your favor!

Thanks, Edney, for sharing your beautiful work! And thanks to our beautiful model, Camila!

Cleon Update + California Home: Aliyah Davis

It is snowing something beautiful here in Bentonville, Arkansas! I have a photo shoot planned for this weekend and as long as my subjects don't back out (I REALLY hope they don't!), it could be a positively magical & beautiful thing with all this fluffy white (tomorrow is supposed to be partly sunny - perfect photography weather). :) I took test shots last week, but they wont be applicable tomorrow because of the reflective quality of the snow. I grew up in the North, so I just love the snow. I was so obsessed with the snow scenes in Katy Perry's Unconditional music video a few weeks ago, that I took screen shots of all my favorites. You can see them here. We don't get much snow here in Arkansas, so this is a rare occasion.

The storm itself is named Cleon, which sounds to me like an epic sci-fi movie: Storm Cleon Attacks!

I might just make up a poster, if I can find some time! Or perhaps a t-shirt:

"I survived Cleon 2013!" Haha!

Look for wintery photos on my blog soon, but in the meantime I have a little gift for those of you who hate snow! My good friend Aliyah Davis (a singer/songwriter/graphic artist/model in LA) took a trip and was kind enough to share some photos of where she was staying. They are just beautiful! You can also check out one of her (several) bands Facebook pages here: They are Inheritor, an LA based symphonic metal band.

Enjoy the  metal  (ba dum chi!) mental vacation via these photos by Aliyah Davis!

Farmer & The Markets: Test Shots & Photoshoot Planning

Disclaimer: I "Gimped" out a sun flare that looked like a camera speck. That's it! The rest are completely un-edited! No judgement against editing programs. I love them. Just wanted to share some simplicity!
This weekend was super busy for me. I feel like I never have enough time to do everything I want to do. I have a few self-portraits on the back burner because I haven't even had time to edit them (not even just put my signature on them!). But I promised myself I would try to post more often, and I promised some great people I would post these photos. These were all taken on my Galaxy SII phone, with minimal or NO EDITING (do you count adding my name?) to all but one photo.

Last week I got to leave work early Wednesday night since Thanksgiving was the next day, and also because I have the best bosses ever (no joke, they don't even read this blog and I promise I am NOT sucking up! My boss Mavis is AMAZING). Best boss ever. I rushed to take some test shots during the golden hour (the hour before dusk when everything is lit up the most beautifully).

Some people call it the magic hour, because the color shifts to a golden cast and the shadows are long and appealing, and it is the most beautiful time of day. It's a good time for photos and yoga too, apparently!

Sunday I had a meeting with Farmer & The Markets. I joked with them that they are "local-famous" here in in Northwest Arkansas. It is true. They are pretty well-known! Farmer & The Markets are a really talented  group of young collegians and their music is fun and uplifting with a ukulele, xylophone (yeah, I know- every kid's favorite X-word!), accordion, tambourine, and a whole host of other cool, unique and potentially hard to pronounce portable instruments. ;)

I'll be doing a photo shoot with them this weekend. I was a little nervous to meet them because I am actually quite shy about meeting new people in real life, but we hit it off and they are super excited and I am super-duper excited so I can't wait to see what happens and how our shoot turns out! I will keep you updated. In the mean time, enjoy these photos.

Just so you can see- it is possible to get varying levels of focus and depth with a camera phone!
I have a lot of work do this week to prep for the shoot. I'm going low-tech and building a GIANT reflector for a sunset shot. I am working on a really cool prop idea so there's that to look forward to, and yeah! I'm pretty stoked and praying for good photo weather! Cross your fingers, say a prayer, or do whatever you do for good luck, and send it our way, pretty please!

If you like posts like these, please help a girl out and comment below. I appreciate your encouragement! :) It helps me to know what you like so I can post more if it in the future. <3

Got any budget-friendly tips or ideas for outdoor photo shooting/lighting?

Send me your links to your golden hour photos/paintings/etc. for features in future posts? I link back!
