Cerulean Dreams

Cerulean Dreams

Brian Atwood high heels
$560 - colette.fr

BLUE & TAN Wedding decor, Book Collection Sets, Centerpiece,...
etsy.com

I absolutely ADORE these Brian Atwood high heels. If I could afford to fork out $560 for a pair of shoes (albeit, suede- only the most difficult material to keep clean), I would be all over those babies!

"Cerulean" always reminds me of The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda says to Andy,

"But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue. It's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact... that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent wasn't it... who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here..."

I watched that movie over and over again so many times in college while I was working on my designs, that I could follow along with the words without even looking up to see where we were in the story. I watched it so many times that the soundtrack simply played the movie in my head (Okay, well... almost). I think it's time to pull this movie out again! I need to brush up on my lines. ;)

Here is that very clip, in all it's devilish glory!

Go ahead, I won't tell if you call her, you know, THAT word... ;)

Happy Wednesday!

I hope yours was as great as mine was.

Geometrics

Geometrics

Ann Taylor / Bao Bao by Issey Miyake zipper purse / David Aubrey chain necklace / Blu Bijoux chain necklace / David Aubrey 18k earrings

Good Morning Monday!!

Here's a little bit of sunshine to brighten your day!

Geometric patterns have been popping up everywhere. There's something retro, fun, and clean lined about geometric shapes. They have a modern feel but can also be somewhat tribal and basic. Do you own anything geometric?

Live Freely

I ate a doughnut this week. I'll admit it. And I enjoyed it. I say this as a joke, only because it seems as though us ladies tend to beat ourselves up when we do something we enjoy- no matter what it is, we get upset with ourselves for doing it. But I think that is just silly. If you want to have a doughnut, have a doughnut. But stick with it. What I mean is, if you decide you want something sweet and you give in to having it, don't beat yourself up for it, because that negates all the enjoyment of having it in the first place. This is true for any guilty pleasure. Make a decision. Enjoy your life regardless. Live freely.

Happy Sunday!

The Haley Boutique: Rogers, AR

Some of the Haley Boutique's accessories and undergarments merchandised on a Parson's style table display.

My coworker, Carly has been going on and on about how cute this shop is, and since they are having a Christmas in July sale right now, my friend Kristin and I decided to check it out.

Me, shopping: butterfly sequin top (thrifted), black denim shorts, Tahari sandals.

5 out of 5 for overall presentation

and special touches

The store is reasonably priced with items ranging from about $25-80. Almost everything that was on sale was about 75% off. I got some pretty sweet deals! More on those pieces soon... in the mean time I thought I would share some photos with you of the store. Thanks to the associates who gave permission to photograph!

Helen (center) was the one who helped me first. All the girls were very nice and helpful!
First of all, I have to say, the storefront was in a strip mall, which would normally make it hard for a  newer place like this to stand out, but they had a bubble machine outside the open doors, which added to the fun atmosphere. When I entered the shop, there was a cute butterfly display on the right and some free mini-cupcakes on the left for customer to enjoy. I thought that was a nice touch.

Cute: Cupcakes for shoppers!

The store associates were just the right amount of helpful. They weren't too pushy like some boutiques can be, though they were eager to take the items off my hands and put them in a dressing room for me so I didn't have to shop with my arms full. Before I knew it, I had picked out ALOT of clothes. But no worries, they didn't rush me in and out of the dressing room. As I tried things on, if I didn't want something, I set them outside the door, and they seemed to magically disappear (again, very helpful).

The dressing room area with a lovely accessories display!
Once my friend Kristin had finished shopping, they held her items at the counter while I continued to try things on. She wasn't stuck being bored waiting for me because there was a nice little seating area with magazines outside of the dressing room space. I love the look of the nook which featured accessories merchandised to look sort of like little cubes with pieces of art lit up inside.

Seating area with magazines for Kristin to read while I tried more clothes on!

The only downside I found was that there were a few items on the racks that had some makeup on them (but barely- I mean my eye is trained as a technical designer to see this, and my bet is that the associates just hadn't seen it yet to spot clean or remove). This can be the case at any store that ladies shop at, so it didn't bug me too much.

Statement necklaces hanging from a clear acrylic jewelry display behind the couch. Modern fixtures accented the dusty green space.

Overall I would give the store a 5 out of 5 for overall presentation and special touches (like playing Christmas pop music for their Christmas in July sale, the mini-cupcakes, mint green tissue paper around my items, and the bubble machine). As a fashion insider, I would say the store owners put a lot of work into making this place a go-to place for local shoppers.

Bonus: One more thing, students get a 10% discount!

It didn't apply to me, however, because I am not in school. I already got a sweet discount because of the sale: I got about $400 worth of clothing for 93 bucks! I would definitely go back at sale time and I think it would be worth checking out again, even if there isn't a sale, when I need to find a cute new outfit for work or play.

I loved their selection of studded purses!

Great atmosphere.  Nice associates.  Pretty selection.

I highly recommend you check it out! See their Facebook page for more information.

Is Bright The New Brown?

Is Bright The New Brown?

Benetton S/S 13 Campaign / Bright Ideas / Gloss Magazine Editorial Pink Is My New Obsession, April/May 2013 Shot... / Multi-colored Pastel Hair from Nylon Mexico Hair Colors Ideas / Taylor is a Candy Beauty for Jeff Tse Shoot / Nadine Naue by Zoltan Tombor in "Friday May Eleventh" for Fashion Gone...

Is it now more subversive of me that I don't dye my hair?

Lately I have noticed the colored hair trend just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I did it way back in 2004-2005 when it was still a somewhat "rebellious" thing to do. I wonder, is it now more subversive of me that I don't dye my hair? Is bright the new brown?

Raquel Schuler's Picks: Tropical Winter - Night

Tropical Winter - Night

Tropical Winter - Night por raquel-schuler usando biking jackets

It is time for another guest collaboration with singer-songwriter, Raquel Schuler of the Brazilian metal band, Hydria.

It's Summer here, but it's Winter in the Southern hemisphere. I would wear this in the Fall/Winter here too. Just add a faux fur collar or a scarf and hat. It gets pretty cold here in Arkansas, USA in the winter -cold enough for snow and ice. It sucks to drive in, but it's fun to play in and catch snowflakes on your tongues. In the summer heat here I sometimes think about how much  look forward to the winter!

Where would you wear this to?

One Skirt:Three Ways

One Skirt: Three Ways

One Skirt: Three Ways by selenamarie318 featuring vince camuto

Most of the time, when ladies purchase a statement piece we can tend to only pair it up with the same outfit and it ends up spending a lot of time in the closet instead of being worn. So I would like to challenge you to make sure you can wear it at least three different ways!

Tips to make sure your favorite statement piece doesn't spend too much time in the back of the closet:

 1. When you purchase a statement piece, make sure you have three or more ways to wear it, otherwise it will spend more time in the closet than it should. Try layering a skirt over a pair of leggings, or wearing your elastic waist band skirt as a top with a cinched in belt. If you are going to purchase an investment piece, you should always consider the different ways you can wear it to switch up your look and make sure your favorite items get their fair share of wear!

2. Don't rule out dresses as tops for layering (the top on the right is a dress tucked in)! Switch it up and try new things. You never know what might work unless you try it on!

3. You don't  have to have three sets of accessories, but you should have a way to switch out the styling so each outfit looks different. For a skirt like this, with multiple colors an easy way to switch it up is to focus on a different color from the print.

Houndstooth Heaven

Houndstooth

Houndstooth by selenamarie318 featuring dorothy perkins

I don't normally like patterns, but I love classic patterns like this. What I love about this pattern is that it has a playful seriousness to it. Depending on how you style houndstooth, it can be all business or all play! Either way, it definitely has a flirty, girlie attitude- though it really should never be worn on TV. Cameras don't pick it up very well. In real life, it is a great way to add a pop of pattern. It has the same visual effect as color, while maintaining a classy clean lined look.

12 Inspiring Images: Emotion Of The Wind In The Trees

I have a thing for trees. Almost every culture has a mythological connection to a tree. There's tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life in Judeo Christian religions and of course the cross of salvation created from none-other than a tree. There's the ancient world-tree, the Yggdrasil of the Norse mythology. The Bodhi tree in Buddhism. The Druids practiced tree worship.Egyptians and Greeks both had mythology centering around trees. There are festivals in Japan centered around the time of the year in which the cherry blossoms bloom. There are trees to which people people make pilgrimages to tie wishes and prayers on.

I even once made an ode to a real wishing tree for a baby shower to celebrate the ushering in of new life.

Perhaps the tree is also iconic to us due to a more scientific reason. Back when we were hunter gatherers and nomads living off the land, a tree off in the distance in the desert would signal a water source, the source of life. Regardless there is something majestic and beautiful about these trees. I hope they inspire you as much as they inspired me.

Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon by selenamarie318 featuring a snowflake necklace

I've always had a thing for the moon. Perhaps it is because my name, Selena, means moon. It is derived from Selene, the goddess of the moon.

Tomorrow night, July 22, 2013 is the full moon.

The July full moon is called

the Thunder Moon.

I love the idea that something so fixed in the sky can be ever changing. It reminds me that each of us follows a path and that, even when there is darkness that darkness will only last for a little while. If we wait long enough through the darkness, a sliver of light will arrive and eventually cover over us until we are bright and shining reflections of love. And although there may be dark days coming after that, even when it feels the darkest we can hold onto the hope that we always have the next full moon to look forward to, knowing we still have a chance to reflect the light of the sun to the Earth below.

Flowers in my hair now...

Flowers in my hair now...

Flowers in my hair now... by selenamarie318 featuring topshop

Happy Saturday!

Saturdays are days for weddings and for lounging and these head wreathes are not just for the engaged crowd. These would be fun for the festival season or for a picnic, with a pretty blanket and a parisol, and a lovely little retro dress...

I just love these head wreathes and flower filled braids. They remind me of the 60s or of the brand Free People, which I am obsessed with right now! I've been thinking I might make one of these. It would be a lot more cost efficient to make it yourself. If I end up making one, I will be sure to post a tutorial.

Tropical Winter - Day

Tropical Winter - Day by raquel-schuler featuring real leather handbags

This is another guest collaboration with Raquel Schuler, lead singer of the Brazilian metal band, Hydria.

I love this casual look that Raquel picked out. This would work well for Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Just add an umbrella! If I switched the jeans out for a pair of trousers or khakis I could wear this outfit to work on Fridays or to the farmer's market on Saturdays.

Inspiration: Strawberry Lemonade

Inspiration: Strawberry Lemonade

Inspiration: Strawberry Lemonade by selenamarie318 featuring denim hot pants

Summer is a time that I always associate with lemonade. I love to make lemonade and add fresh strawberries. I will slice them up and let them get all gooey and yummy and add them into my lemonade. Another option is to add in frozen strawberries instead of ice. Yum! This also a good desert if you blend it up as a strawberry-lemon-ice. Food trends always influences lotion, perfumes, and related color trends. So it doesn't surprise me when I am more likely to pick up a bottle of strawberry scented shampoo during strawberry season. Yum!

Be Strong

Life doesn't always go exactly as planned... things sometimes go wrong. When they do (and at some point they inevitably will), don't beat yourself up. It won't help. Just know, you're not the only one who has felt that way and you are not alone. Be strong. Things will get better. You'll get through it and you'll be stronger because of it. Just have patience. Wait and see.

Summer is for sailing!

Summer is for sailing!

Summer is for sailing! by selenamarie318 featuring studded glasses

I love the look of a pretty sailing dress, anchors, and pretty postcards! It reminds me so much of when I used to live near the beach and could wake up and smell the scent of the ocean out my window. I absolutely love this heavy metal print! It's cute and kitchy and fits me so well (I love metal!). I've never been sailing, but we did go out on a pontoon boat when I was in elementary school and we had so much fun. Dolphins even swam right up next to us! What are your summer plans?
